RBI ups housing loan limit to Rs 10 lakh for weaker section

In an effort to promote housing for low income groups in major cities, doubled the Reserve Bank on Wednesday limit for housing loans to RS 10 lakh considered under priority sector lending.

"It has been decided to raise the threshold from RS 5 lakh to RS 10 lakh in bank loans to non-governmental agencies approved by NHB for its refinancing, the loan for the construction or conversion of the individual dwelling units or sleeping clearance and rehabilitation of slum areas. "RBI said in a statement.

 As of the existing standards, banks have to provide 40 percent of total credit to the specified priority sectors, including housing for weaker sections.

 Loan of such a nature that fall under indirect finance to housing sector, as the final payment made through NHB approved non-governmental organizations.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in his budget for 2012-13 proposed to increase the limit for indirect funding under priority sector lending by RS 5 lakh to RS 10 lakh for the construction or renovation of housing for the weaker part.

 In July last year, the RBI said assistance to a non-governmental agency approved by NHB for refinance the construction or reconstruction of dwelling units or for slum clearance and rehabilitation of slum dwellers, subject to a ceiling of loan component of RS 5 lakh per house.
