The biggest concern for borrowers is whether banks and other lenders will follow the lead of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in the future rate decisions, Loan Market corporate spokesman Paul Smith said on Tuesday the release of the findings of a new online survey.
In February the central bank was widely expected the official cash rate cut next fall in both November and December.
Instead, the RBA left the cash rate unchanged at 4.25 percent, while their standard variable mortgage lenders lifted due to increased borrowing costs.
"The banks, which are independent of the RBA and lifting their variable rates, has a lot of anxiety and confusion among consumers causes," Smith said.
"Home loan customers are uncertain about the direction prices are heading."
The central bank left the cash rate unchanged in March, as almost all lenders.
The online survey of 764 respondents shows that 46 percent were definitely consider a fixed rate home loan, while 14 percent said they would be part of their mortgage problems.
Thirty six percent said they were opposed to the idea of establishing their loan, while four percent said they were unsure what to do.
"With attractive solid products are still available and the European debt crisis still unresolved some consumers, the convenience of locking in their mortgage for a few years of searching," Smith said.
The data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics last week showed that 11.4 percent of home loans granted in January were fixed rate loans for two years or more.
This was only slightly lower than the 11.7 percent in December, the biggest monthly rate since June 2008.
Mr. Smith warned that borrowers needed to ensure they lock into a fixed rate for the right reasons, such as peace of mind, rather than as a speculative play on where rates will move.
He said that a large number of Australians committed to a fixed rate just before the global financial crisis in 2008 and then saw the RBA reduced the cash rate quickly to a near record low of three percent from 7.25 percent.
